Money-Back Guarantees Explained: What to Check Before You Buy

A money-back guarantee is only as good as its fine print. How long it runs, what it covers, who honors it and how to use it if you need to.

A money-back guarantee changes the math of trying something new. If the product doesn't suit you, you get your money back and the only thing you've lost is a little time. But guarantees vary a lot, and the useful ones share a few features you can check in two minutes.

What a good guarantee looks like

  1. It's in writingThe terms are published on the seller's site or in the order confirmation, not just mentioned in a video or an ad.
  2. It runs long enoughAnything you take daily needs weeks, not days, to judge. Thirty days is common; sixty days or more gives you room to try it properly.
  3. It says how to claimLook for a clear method: an email address, a phone number, a form. "Contact us" with no way to contact anyone is not a method.
  4. It's clear about conditionsDo you need to return the bottles, even empty ones? Who pays return shipping? Is the refund the full price or the product price minus shipping?
  5. Someone stands behind itSome products are sold through established retail or payment platforms that process refunds themselves. That adds a second party you can turn to if the maker doesn't answer.

Where you buy matters

Many guarantees apply only to orders placed through the official website or authorized sellers. Buy the same product from an unofficial reseller and you may have no guarantee at all. We cover this in official site vs. marketplace.

How to use a guarantee

  • Save your order confirmation and the guarantee terms as a screenshot or PDF on the day you order.
  • Put a reminder in your calendar a week before the guarantee ends, so you decide on purpose rather than by default.
  • Ask for the refund in writing, and keep the reply.
  • If you paid by credit card and a seller won't respond, the FTC explains how to dispute a charge with your card issuer.

Watch for automatic shipments

Some offers sign you up for repeat deliveries. That can be convenient, but only if you chose it. Before you pay, check whether the order is one-time or recurring and how to cancel. If it isn't clear, ask.
